Mar 9, 2021 · Solid, bee-tight hive equipment is necessary because any secondary openings will be eagerly sought by bees to avoid passing through the pollen trap grid. Two pollen trap designs are described. Both designs use the same principle of removing pollen from the bees but differ greatly in all other features and in method of mounting on the hive.

Entrance Size and Location for Swarm Trap
Feb 8, 2012 · During a swarm last summer, scout bees did check out a NUC box baited with pheromone, but used a bee vac(I know with all its down sides of the bee vac thread). Bee vac worked quite well other then a rough flange where there was a diameter change in the pipe - damaged a few bees.

Mar 20, 2025 · Before you try this think it through. My equipment is not standard in many particulars. Among them is that I use top bee space instead of the bottom beespace common to commercial hives. So the ends of the frames do not block the entrance. I suppose with bottom bee space you could put a notch in the bottom. It would work the same.

Feb 4, 2016 · It is possible to be chemical free but the odds are very high that a beginner trying chem free will have dead hives to show for his efforts. After you have kept bees for five years and learned how to split to make new hives to replace losses consider chem free if you desire. Beware of snake oil salesmen. The bee world is loaded with them. Nov 9, 2005 · Mostly what I do depends on what the landowner finds acceptable and what suits the situation. I have a couple on bee trees where I can take the swarms but can't touch the parent hive and I just mount them on shelf brackets a couple feet above the existing entrance with a little strip of burlap hanging down almost to the entrance to the main hive.
